The Himalayas
Culture
This region of the Greater Himalayan Range, now known as the Kullu Valley, was once called Kulanthapitha, 'The End of the Habitable World'. Here the mountains meet the sky bridging Heaven and Earth. Their history is steeped in mystery and tradition. Home to many great legends involving such beings as Krishna, Shiva and Paravati, the people of today keep ancient traditions alive. One of the remarkable qualities of this part of India is the unique mountain culture that distinguishes it from the rest of the country.
The villagers live in stone houses, cultivating terraced hillsides of wheat and apples, while growing crops for their cows and enjoying a wide range of locally produced food. The shepherds play a crucial role, socially and economically. This milk and fiber provides food and warmth, the legendary native wool, yak and pashmina all come from this country. This area is known throughout the world for its tapestries and shawls.
Community
We choose to work in this region because of the uniqueness of the culture and the strength of the mountain region. Our products are hand-woven in the Upper Kullu Valley. These designs have been used for generations to communicate and distinguish tribal identity. The group we work with has been collecting the ancient designs and their meanings for two generations to preserve their authenticity. Now, they are offering them to the modern world, as a way to keep the designs alive, as well as earn a living with traditional skills.
Our cooperative works in an idyllic location, surrounded with fruit trees and grain fields. Weavers work on their own schedule and at their skill level. They earn a living wage and are actively engaged in cultural preservation. Our way of doing business is always in alignment with Fair Trade 'Principles and Practices'.
